Organic traffic value: what your clicks would cost as ads

Add your non-brand organic clicks and the cost per click for the same terms. You get the monthly and yearly ad cost of that traffic, and how it compares with what you spend on SEO.

Your organic clicks would cost about $9,575 a month as ads. That is 2.4× your SEO spend, or $5,575 a month more than you pay for SEO.

How it works

Each row prices one group of keywords. The tool then adds the rows up.

  • row ad cost = monthly clicks × average CPC
  • monthly value = sum of all rows
  • annual value = monthly value × 12
  • blended CPC = monthly value ÷ total clicks
  • value per $1 = monthly value ÷ monthly SEO spend

With the defaults, 4,550 clicks a month across four groups would cost about $9,575 as ads, or $114,900 a year.

How to read the result

Traffic value is a replacement cost. It answers one question: if organic search stopped tomorrow, what would it cost to buy the same clicks? That makes it a useful line in a budget talk, next to revenue.

A value well above your SEO spend means organic search is cheap traffic for you. A value below it is not a failure on its own. Low-CPC clicks can still convert well, so check sales before you cut anything.

Assumptions and limits

  • It is an estimate. CPCs change with season, location, device and competition.
  • It assumes one organic click equals one paid click. Their conversion rates can differ.
  • It prices clicks, not outcomes. A high value does not prove high revenue.
  • Buying all this traffic at once would likely raise some bids, so real ad cost could be higher.

Common questions

Is traffic value the same as revenue?

No. It is what the same clicks would cost if you bought them as ads. It says nothing about how many of those visitors buy. Use the SEO ROI calculator to turn visits into sales and profit.

Why leave out brand searches?

People who search your brand name would usually find you anyway, and branded ads are often cheap. Counting them makes SEO look better than it is. Filter them out in Search Console before you add up clicks.

Where do I get clicks and CPC?

Take monthly clicks from the Search Console performance report, grouped by topic. Take CPC from your ad account or a keyword planner for the same terms. Rough averages per group are fine for this estimate.

Would I really pay that much for ads?

Probably not exactly. Bidding on every term would push some prices up, and you might skip low-value terms. Read the figure as a replacement cost, not as a budget you would actually spend.
